Music Curriculum

At Woodley Primary School, we provide the children with a variety of different musical experiences in order to embed skills and ultimately promote a genuine love of music. Our music curriculum aims to bring out the best in every child, enabling children to build their confidence and creativity through artistic expression. Throughout their time in school, children learn to talk descriptively about music they have heard or played, discussing the interrelated dimensions of music (pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and notation) in addition to developing an understanding of how music can have an emotional impact on the listener. We give the children the opportunity to listen to, play and appraise music from a wide variety of historical periods, traditions, and genres through recorded and live music, and children also demonstrate their progress by composing and performing their own music for their peers and families. At Woodley Primary School we want to give the children as many enriching musical opportunities as possible, and we therefore ensure every child has the opportunity to learn to play a tuned instrument taught by a music specialist throughout the duration of Year 4. Children who wish to further improve their musical skills can also enjoy extra-curricular activities such as joining the school choir, recorder ensemble and partaking in private tutored music lessons. We celebrate musical achievements in school with class assemblies for each year group, inviting families and friends to visit school and see what their children have learned.
